    Position Title Assistant Professor of Religious Studies

    Position Summary

    The Department of Religious Studies at the University of the Incarnate Word invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 2020. We are seeking candidates with research and teaching competence in the area of either comparative religions, or contextual theology, the latter with a focus on experience among Asian-Americans, African-Americans, Latino/a, and or indigenous Americans. In addition to existing, upper-level courses in the area of specialty, new faculty are encouraged to develop new courses reflecting interests. All full-time faculty in the department are regularly expected to teach one or more of the four introductory courses that currently fulfill UIW’s core requirement: Introduction to Theology & Ethics, Origins of Christianity, The Religious Quest, and Prayer & Spirituality. This position has a 4-4 teaching load, and all full-time faculty are expected to engage in service at the department, college, and university levels.

    Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to quality, innovative undergraduate teaching, eagerness to contribute to fulfilling UIW’s Mission, and poised to make a scholarly contribution in their field of specialty. Familiarity with the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, broadly defined, is desired.

    UIW is designated as an HSI, and its student population is diverse by many measures. We are especially interested in candidates with a record of successful teaching and mentoring of students from a variety of backgrounds, including first-generation, low income, and racial and ethnic minorities. Applicants are encouraged to discuss relevant skills and experience in their letter of application and/or statement of teaching philosophy.

    Essential Functions

    Official duties and responsibilities of faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service and professional activities. In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission.

    Qualifications
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    -Research and teaching competency in the area of either comparative religions, or contextual theology, the latter with a focus on experience among Asian-Americans, African-Americans, Latino/a, and or indigenous Americans;
    -Ability to deliver existing, upper-level courses in your area of specialty and develop new courses reflecting their interests;
    -Ability to deliver one or more of the four introductory courses that currently fulfill UIW’s core requirement: Introduction to Theology & Ethics, Origins of Christianity, The Religious Quest, and Prayer & Spirituality;
    -Familiarity with the Catholic Intellectual Tradition;
    -Demonstrated understanding of Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs);
    -Demonstrated competency in instruction and mentoring of students from a variety of backgrounds, including first-generation, low income, and racial and ethnic minorities;
    -Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;
    -Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA

    Required Education

    Ph.D. or Th.D. in Religious Studies, Theology or a related field is required by the time of the appointment.

    Required Work Experience

    Minimum of one year of teaching experience in the field and demonstrated instructional competency via student and peer evaluation processes.
