2026 Call for Papers

Daniel Rober, Sacred Heart University (CT)

The Scripture section welcomes proposals connected to the 2026 convention theme, “Reclaiming Faith Amid Christian Nationalism.”

Topics that might be addressed include but are not limited to:

  •  Deployment of Scriptural language and imagery as warrants for Christian nationalist politics.
  • Readings of the Bible for and against Christian Nationalism in various denominational traditions (Mainline Protestant, Evangelical, Fundamentalist, Catholic, Orthodox).
  • The role of Scriptural proclamation and preaching within Christian Nationalist political movements.
  • Apocalyptic Scriptural texts (Daniel, Revelation) and nationalist political agendas. Does the extreme language of these texts invite extreme political interpretations?
  • Christian Nationalist usage of the Hebrew Bible in connection both to historical Jewish readings of the same texts as well as to contemporary Zionist readings.
  • The relationship between prophetic and Christian Nationalist “styles” of deploying Scripture in political contexts.

In addition to papers on the conference theme, the Scripture section welcomes proposals for papers to be included in a “book panel” on Michael Peppard’s How Catholics Encounter the Bible (Oxford University Press, 2024).

Proposals are due by December 15, 2025. Notification of acceptance will be sent out by January 15, 2026.

We are additionally seeking scholars with interest/expertise in Scripture to take on the role of convening the Scripture section. Please reach out if you or someone you know would be interested in this role.
