Theology of the Church

We invite systematic, theological, and constructive papers in four areas:

1) On ecclesiological aspects of the conference theme “Found in Translation: Living Faith in New Contexts." For example, what should be the church's place in translation of the Bible for liturgical, spiritual, and scholarly work? Is translation of the scriptural text primarly the domain of scholars or of the church? Does the principle "law of [communal] prayer is the law of [communal] belief" also apply to the law of [communal] translation?

2) On contemporary theologies that heal intra-ecclesial divides. What theologies and theologians further constructive healing of the interior life of the Church and why would they help overcome these bitter divisions? As Paul had appealed to the Corinthian church, how should we invoke the name of Christ to move from dissension to being "united in the same mind and the same judgment" (1 Corinthians 1:10)?

3) On contemporary theologies and ecclesiological practices that provide authentic connections between Ecclesiology and Mariology not only in Catholic belief but also Orthodox and Protestant belief.

4) Since the conference is being held near Mexico, we are encouraging of papers on Mexican ecclesiologies and their interaction with eccelsiologies from the United States.

We will consider proposals on other topics as long as they fit within this section’s discussion of the theology of the Church.

All papers should be conceived for an effective twenty-minute presentation with a ten-minute discussion afterward.

Please submit your 250-500 proposal with the exact presentation title and your professional contact information to the convener of the section, Dr. Matthew Sutton ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Proposals are due December 1, 2011. Notification of acceptance will begin after January 1, 2012.
