The Philosophy of Religion section requests papers that focus on the relationship between language, translation and hermeneutics; as Gadamer said, “every translation is at the same time an interpretation.” To this end, consider the work of Paul Ricouer or David Tracy on the meaning of texts in different contexts; the goal of shared meaning between author and reader as “the fusion of horizons,” as Gadamer put it, or Heidegger’s understanding that hermeneutics is Dasein’s mode of being; Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction of metaphysics through semiotics; the philosophy of biblical interpretation, such as through Schleiermacher or Dilthey; the use of interpretive theory in aesthetics (e.g., Jean-Francois Lyotard and the sublime); John Caputo’s or Merold Westphal’s appropriation of poststructuralism.
