In accord with the conference theme, the American Catholic Life and Thought section seeks papers pertaining to "Religion, Economics, and Culture in Conflict and Conversation," including but not limited to papers that consider the historical tension between Roman Catholics and the United States political and economic system; the diversity of political and economic options taken by contemporary U.S. Catholics including liberal, conservative, and radical approaches; and the ongoing "culture wars," especially surrounding electoral politics and the recent economic crisis. This section also welcomes papers related to the city or region of our conference venue, the Great Northwest and Portland, Oregon, in particular. Papers related to the "conflict and conversation" surrounding the arrival and ongoing presence of Catholics in this region would be especially relevant.
