The American Catholic Life and Thought section seeks papers pertaining to the conference theme of translation. In particular, we are open to papers that consider the ways in which Catholicism has been and continues to be “translated” into the American context, as well as the implications of this translation for both Catholicism and American culture and society. The focus of such papers include--but should not be limited to—the strengths and limitations of contemporary American public theologians; alternatives to contemporary public theology in America; historical accounts of Catholicism within America; possible tensions between being Catholic and being American. Since the conference is being held in San Antonio, topics concerning Catholic immigration into America—particularly from Latin America--will also be of interest. Proposals should include the scholar’s name, position, and institution.
